A GUD movie after a break.......

Saturday, March 18, 2006
Watched Sithiram Pesuthadi last week, we went for a night show to a not so famous theater (SSR Pankajam), since it was a week day i expected around 100 odd ppl which normally happens for mediocre budget movies, but the theatre was almost full. I wondered why? guessed it might be for the Gaana song in that movie. The hero introduction didnt have a song which usually will have some hundreds of ppl waiting for him and will dance together with him. But this introduction was simple and didnt have much of a build up. The hero looks normal, no hair coloring or special outfits with cargos, blazer not even a pattu veshti, instead he wears normal costumes except for songs. But in our movies we r used to "Pichakara ezhai heroes wearing high class outfits". The most important thing was that the hero does not have any Punch Dialogue. He jus utters "Saavadichiruvendi..." periodically tats all. The director has proved that movies without punch dialogues can be made in Tamil Nadu and ppl will accept it. Next we ll come to Heroine, she does not has that posh look but looks cute and homely like a pakkathu aathu ponnu from our locality. I ve already seen her in "Kanaa Kannil.." from Police(Malayalam Movie). I used to think why doesnt such QTs act in tamil movies(i am not saying that tamil heroines are not cute), it has been fulfilled now. The hero seems different in this movie, i didnt recognise that he was the smart and trim cop who played in 4 students till my cousin told me. He has adapted himself well for this rowdy role. The comedy track is also different in the sense that is embedded in the story itself, there is no scenes like "Hero nalla sandai pottiturupaar, sandai mudijanthum oru cut panni Vadivelu or Vivek moonjiya kaamikaradhu.." the comedy is not extraordinary but you can laugh out loud. One more thing was that generally in movies some one will be "Uthama purushan/pathini.." i mean ideal character and they ll make no mistake or kettadhu in their life, but this movie is not like tat, it is a bit practical and each one makes mistakes which normally happens in real life. The core story is not new, same old panakaara ezhai love stuff but the way it was presented i.e. the screenplay was different and Misshkin must be appreciated for his effort. The music is not so gud, but you can listen to all of them.

Apart from all these the movie has one more gud feature, the simple but powerful "Vaazha Meenukkum..." song by Gaana Ulaganaathan. Kuthu paatuna ippadi thaan irukkanum, veri pudichu kathara maadhiri irukka koodathu, in my opinion. Even though it is a Gaana song it has a gud tune, and different lyrics, the way in which that guy had personified ppl in terms of fish is somewhat new and gud. Maalavika has to be appreciated for her dance in that song, apart from her vilagippora sari and seducing movements what impressed us was her smile and the grace with which she danced in that song, the steps were also simple like the song and movie itself. Kudos to the team. Immediately i changed my ringtone to this song. Am sure that this guy will get more chance in movies and give us some different Gaanas like this one. I am happy that ordinary and down to earth films like this are doing well, yes in the interval they displayed a slide saying "Rasigargal vendukoluku inanga naalai mudhal Naangu Kaatchigal", definitely it is a gud movie and a break from current tamil cinema, i wud rate it better than Gajini(claimed to be a great movie by some) because Gajini looked like a spoof of memento except for that bubbly flashback. but ella movies um idhe maadhiri vandhaalum bore adichudum.......

P.S: did anybody listen to the song "Karka Karka.." in VV, gud one and Kamal andha paatuku style police dressla vandha chance ae illaaama irukkum.

Exams - what is the purpose?

Saturday, March 11, 2006
The "Ondra Maasa Sani" for all +2 students started last week. I mean the Board Exams. Since i have been thru' i know the trauma and pressure that the students face in this time. Parents keep saying repeatedly "Nalla padida/di engineering seat illa medicine vaanganum" such that there is no other course in this earth. The students literaly become machines in this 1 month. Commerce students have their own tensions but doesnt bear the brunt like Science guys. The Physics exams happened yesterday and as usual students started saying that "ellam out of syllabus", "avanga kettadhu bookla ille","ippadi ellam kaetta naanga enna panradhu?". When listening to such comments i asked myself what is the purpose of this exam, if they ask straightforward questions only from the specified text book, even a computer can do this on a 300 page word document if we click on Ctrl + F. I am not trying to downgrade the studiousness of our +2 boys/gals. I myself had a chance to see the Physics paper coz my sister is in 12th std. The paper is not easy i agreed, but it is not so tough as well. It is somewhat a bit higher std. that too only 1 marks. Around 3 or 4 questions were twisted and the choices were given a bit intelligent so that the students will get confused on deciding the correct answer. This is happened and it was over the previous day. The next day i saw a Tamil news paper and to my surprise found that the media has hyped this issue also, he has mentioned that "Maaanavargal kumural..." for what? for asking some 3 or 4 indirect questions? the parents also joined them in saying "ippadiyellam kaetaa avanga eppadi padippaanga?", look at the attitude of these ppl. This kinda attitude questions the very purpose of examinations in this country. IMHO exams shud test the intelligence, analysing ability, aptitude and time management skills of students instead of transforming them into human USB drives, load into memory at home and write it into paper and forget the whole thing coz we dont understand many things in our school syllabus, we just mug it up. The saddest part of all this is that, students are demanding a re-exam it seems. Does it mean that exams are for making students score gud marks? instead of testing them.
After reading all this you will definitely ask "Nee engada padicha? idhe kuppai thaane?", i asked the same question to myself, "Yes i agree that i studied this same medium and i am one of the victims of this spoilt education system and testing methods.", i have to blame myself for not thinking the same way as i am thinking now, if i had thought i wud have chosen to study in a CBSE/ICSE school(even after 10th std.) and found a better career other than Software engineering, my parents wanted total, they didnt want knowledge so i was forced to study in a TNHSE school. When i realised all this it was too late, coz i was in my 3rd year engineering, from that point till now i understand everything i study. The reason for this transformation is some frends of mine i met in college. I mean to say that til college 2nd year naanum olunga padikkalai. Now the CBSE is also losing its stature and scoring there has also become a "Not so hard JOB". This system and the testing method definitely needs a change. It is high time parents think about what knowledge their child has received in this 14 years of schooling rather than targeting on the total, in the same time govt. also shud do something to alter the current situation of "Mark edutha podhum".....

P.S: Will continue later.

Tagged!!!

Wednesday, March 08, 2006
So i am tagged by Ponnarasi on this day. The TAG is that i have to right about the woman to wish. I will wish my Paati who is special to me,OK lets move to the Tag.
Two things i like about her:
1. The guts and her boldness, there are incidents to justify this.
2. Her intelligence and the affection she shows towards me. I am basically a very absent minded guy, whenever i search for or ask for any of my belongings she ll be there to bring it to me, thats why i ll seek a wife like her. :-))

Things i dont like about her:
1. She will speak unwanted info about others( i mean gossips ).

Two dishes I love her preparing:
1. Idly with chutney and Sambar
2. Mizhagu Rasam.

Manasu kekkalai so i ll also write about my Mom,
Two things i like about her:
1. Very much caring and affectionate towards others(may it be anyone).
2. Her humorous nature.

Thing i dont like about her:
1. Very very short tempered.

Two dishes I love her preparing:
1. Saambar sadham and Ulundhu appalam.
2. Podi dhosai with paasi paruppu saambar.

Regd. this Women's day stuff, last year same day our Yahoo groups was flooded with wishes, one guy asked dont we have Men's day? A reply came that, "Machi inniku mattum thaan Women's Day da matha 364 daysum Men's Day" :-)), dont think that i am a male chauvinist, jus said it for a Joke, Wishes for all women who read my blog.

Somethings change......

Tuesday, March 07, 2006
Yesterday a change happened in my life it was something i did expect, the change was instead of scolding me like "22 vaisu mudinjaachu innum porupillama alaiyariye da" my mom and paati said "23 vaisu mudinjaachu innum porupillama alaiyariye da", yes i was born in the same day before 23 years. I was surprised that they changed the wordings accordingly. Hope this year is gud for me and all others. I received lotsa wishes than usual, felt a bit proud and happy that i have made many frends after getting a job ;-).

K(al)ezhavanin Kaadhali

Sunday, March 05, 2006

For the past FOUR weeks i have not even seen a single movie, neither in TV or theatre. Mansaatchi ennai uruthiduchu, so inniku eppdiyaavadhu edhavadhu movie paathudanumnu mudivu panniten. Called my friend, he also told the same story of not being able to watch a movie due hectic office work. We planned for Dishyum and arrived at Udhayam for a morning show, unfortunately the show was at 3:30. So we decided half minded to go for this movie. My expectation was that since the great star SJ is acting in this movie it shud have some dubble meaning dialogues and some skin show. Yes he didnt disappoint us. I noticed one thing in the title, there was a side line saying 36-28-36, guess it is Nayan's size. Why did the director choose such a comment? publicity huh. The story is not so great and so is the screenplay. Nayanthaara looks gud and beautiful in sarees/half sarees and churidhars, but she is horrible in jeans and tight tops. "Edho Arisimootai load thaangaama vedikka pora maadhiri irundha". In some songs while making fast movements she looks like an Amoeba. I feel it is better if she dances like "Oru vaarthai pesa oru varusham.." from Ayya. Then comes our smart, sexy heart throbbing hero of all times. SJ Surya has performed his role perfectly, nah nah he has lived as a playboy. In some songs he performs some solo bits like Vijai used to do, I thought where is the choreographer, gues he is doing his own choreography. Dancing like a buffon. Vivek as usual does some comedy, its gud but not so great. The other girl who sleeps with SJ was hot and did her part well. The last 20 minutes of the movie was great, it tested our patience to the max. we survived and atlast won the challenge by sitting till the climax. Appo padathula nalladhae illiya? :-?. Irukku, the songs "Eno kangal..." and "Tajmahal oviyakaadhal.." were nice. And some scenes by SJ were a bit comic. In short if you have not seen a movie for a long time and longing for some entertainment you can go for this. To my surprise the gals outnumbered guys for this movie. Yes they enjoyed the movie better than us, i cud c for myself. Namma paakumbodhu en avanga paaka koodadhu, they also have the right to c stuff like this coz both are equal na. Then one more thing - Dhayavuseidhu kudumbathoda poidaatheenga, pona padam mulusa paaka mudiyaadhu.

Moozhgaadha Shippae Friendship thaan......

Friday, March 03, 2006

Met my old class mate yesterday, once upon a time we were playing as small 4th std. kids, astonishingly 13 years have passed away, now she is married and gonna be a mother in few months, but she is still my friend. Last year same time she called me suddenly after 7 years to personally invite me for her marriage, she is far away from Chennai hence cudnt come in person. When i picked up the fone and found out it was her, i cudnt speak any words. I was dumbstruck and amazed. She has somehow got my fone number from my relatives in my native and called me. I didnt even manage to see or call her when i had been to my native every year. Thats when i understood the value of True friendship which does not fade with time but improves with even if we are parted away. Now she is in Chennai near my street and came to my house yesterday, i thought it was renewal of friendship after 13 years.....

The Warrior Prince

Thursday, March 02, 2006
Warning: If you are not interested in Computers and tech stuff please Skip this post.

Warrior prince who was huge and strong, but slow in speech. His father was king Telamon of Salamis. He was considered the second greates warrior after Achilles, and he was the one who carried the hero's dead body back to the camp while Odysseus held the Trojans back.
Who is this Prince?
He is AJAX. This word is popular in another field too, yes it is one of the buzzwords in Software Industry now. I just tried a sample application with this technology, just thought i cud blog about it. I am not going to brag about my application coz there is nothing in it. It is very simple.
AJAX stands for Asynchronous Javascript and XML. Initially when i heard about it i thought of AJAX as some hi fi tech stuff, and when ppl said "You can update the data in WebPage without refreshing it " i confirmed that. But atlast it turned out to be simple and so simple like ordinary "HttpRequest". The core object of this AJAX is a seemingly new object called "XMLHttpRequest" why is this special? and how is this different from the former? will be the next question. The answer is it is not special but different from a "HttpRequest" object. Basically there are 2 differences:
1. It implicitly provides support for XML(which is the standardised data transfer method).
2. It has the ability to connect to the server and get the information without the knowledge of the User, i mean the request -> server -> response cycle happens in background.
Initially i had a misconception that this is called Asynchronous because of the background process stuff, but i was wrong. Thanks to the Google and its results that cleared my doubts. This is called Asynchronous because of the following reason:
In ordinary Requests stuff, the user will have to wait in the same window until the server's response is completely received by the browser, i.e u have to be in sync. But in case of XMLHttpRequest, there is a flag attribute which when set appropriately allows you to be out of sync, i.e. you can proceed to the next action without having to wait for the server's response. This can be made synchronous also. The XMLHttpRequest can call almost all kind of requests that can be made via an ordinary browser.
Another misunderstanding about AJAX was that it is a cutting edge technology. No its not it is already around 10 years old(i dont have proof for it) jus heard it from a senior. Biggies like Microsoft and Google have been using AJAX in the past, Google maps is an example. Now lets look at the pros and cons. Before which i ll have to mention a disclaimer.
Disclaimer:
I have not used AJAX intensively, so these info may not be accurate, i am writing what i feel about this technology.

Pros:
-----
1. You need not refresh the page boss, which saves time.
For eg. you have around 10 fields in a screen of which only 2nd-5th have to be autopopulated based on the first field and the fields 7-10 have to be autopopulated based on the 6th field. You need not refresh/reload or click the buttons in the page twice to autopopulate the details. Instead it will be done automatically as you enter the values, another striking example is auto completion of forms.
In short your application will behave like a standalone Desktop Swing/VB like application instead of a Web App.
2. Since it supports direct XML response you can render the incoming data easily using some stylesheets.
3. Asynchronous mode, no waiting until server responds, proceed with the next fields.
4. Improves the User experience.

Cons:
-----
1. Since the process happens in background, if there is some problem in the server's response we may not know directly coz in the normal case browser will display a "404" or "500" error, but here we have to explicitly handle these kinda errors by getting the status code manually.
2. It does not suit every application. Whenever we hear about something new we ll have enthu to use it imme (i am one of them), but we shud not do that mistake here.
3. One more con is that when you use GET method for Http requests, the browser will cache the response and will not retrieve the latest data , the remedy for this will be:
i.add a timestamp to the end of request URL.
ii. use POST method.

A typical use of AJAX wud be, most of us wud have noted that when we republish our entire blog we see the page being auto refreshed while showing the progress if we use AJAX we can make this progress bar behave like a Windows component and no need to auto refresh atleast for the User, coz actually it refreshes the data.

Now i ll tell about my Application. I just wrote a simple html with Javascript, which will display the netstat info of a remote UNIX server each 30 seconds without refreshing the page. The server side component was a single CGI script.
AJAX is not supported by all browsers, currently Opera 7.0 doesnt support it so we ll not be able to use full features of Gmail etc. in Opera.

For those who are interested in further study visit this link.

For ppl who came thru' this patiently please dont curse me for an inappropriate title. :-)

Cheers,
Ram
